Common Fence Problems We Repair
Leaning and Heaved Posts
The most common fence problem in Greater Boston. Freeze-thaw cycles lift shallow posts, and wet soil lets them tip. We reset or replace the affected posts with deeper, better-draining footings so the problem does not come back next winter.
Broken Boards, Pickets and Rails
Individual boards, pickets and rails can be replaced without rebuilding the whole section. On older wood fences we match the style and, where possible, the size of the boards.
Storm and Tree Damage
Nor'easters, heavy wet snow and falling limbs can knock down whole sections. We clear the damaged section, check the neighboring posts and rebuild what is needed.
Cracked Vinyl and Bent Aluminum
Damaged vinyl panels, rails and post sleeves can usually be replaced individually. Bent aluminum pickets and rails can be swapped out to restore the line.
Chain Link Repairs
We fix bent top rails, loose or torn fabric, missing ties and damaged posts, and re-tension sagging runs.
Gate Repairs
Gates that drag, sag or will not latch usually have a loose hinge post, worn hardware or a frame that has racked out of square. We adjust, re-brace or rehang the gate and replace hinges and latches as needed.

Repair or Replace?
| Situation | Usually the Better Choice |
|---|---|
| A few broken boards or panels | Repair |
| One or two leaning posts | Repair |
| Gate sagging or not latching | Repair |
| Rot in most of the posts | Replace |
| Fence leaning along the whole run | Replace |
| Repairs would cost close to a new fence | Replace |
If replacement makes more sense, we will explain why and give you a quote for both options so you can decide.

A pool fence with a broken latch or a gap at the bottom is a safety problem. Massachusetts pool barriers need self-closing, self-latching gates and a minimum height of 48 inches, and we treat pool fence repairs as a priority.
Fence Repairs by Material
| Material | Common Repairs |
|---|---|
| Wood | Replace broken boards and rails, reset or replace rotted posts, rebuild storm-damaged sections |
| Vinyl | Replace cracked panels, rails and post sleeves, reset leaning posts |
| Aluminum | Replace bent pickets and rails, realign posts, repair gate hardware |
| Chain link | Replace top rail, re-tension fabric, patch or replace mesh, reset posts |
| Gates | Replace hinges and latches, re-brace frames, reset gate posts |
When to Call for a Repair
- A post moves when you push on it
- The fence leans more after each winter
- Boards are cracked, missing or rotting at the bottom
- A gate drags on the ground or will not latch
- A pool gate no longer closes and latches on its own
- A storm or falling limb has knocked down or bent a section
Small problems get bigger. A loose post puts strain on the rails and panels next to it, and a gate that does not latch can let pets out or leave a pool unprotected. Fixing these early usually costs far less than waiting.
Storm Damage Repairs
Nor'easters, heavy wet snow and high winds can break posts, snap rails and drop tree limbs onto fences. After a storm, we inspect the damage, secure what is left standing and repair or rebuild the damaged sections.
